Bart is a general contractor in North Carolina. His company, Built by Design, builds new homes and small commercial projects. He has been working with wood since childhood. He first saw photographs of Stewart Coffin's puzzles in the November/December 1984 issue of Fine Wood Working. At the time he was in college and did not have the tools or experience to build them. In 2000, he was searching the internet and found the Puzzle World web site. He printed Stewart's The Puzzling World Of Polyhedral Dissections and other reference material and started building puzzles. Bart says the following about his puzzles:
 
"Building things out of wood has been a passion of mine ever since I can remember. As a child I preferred taking my toys apart rather than playing with them. This fascination for how things work still intrigues me. I have found that these puzzles combine these two fascinations."
